I enjoyed this English countryside romance though sometimes Thea was so uptight It took her a long time to see what Gideon was offering In her defense though she has no one to protect her from village gossip and her reputation is important for her livelihood There is a lot of back and forth and just when you think they can move forward something else gets in the way Fortunately the ending and epilogue make the wait worthwhile Audiobook narration by Nicholas Boulton is excellent I ve yet to hear a character and voice he can t master 35 stars for the story I did really like Gideon 45 stars for the narration Audiobook provided by the author for review

colorful history as a renowned lover of women But a decade at war has transformed this sensual rake and what he wants now is only to live a life on his own terms And so he comes to the uietest village in England searching for serenity and instead encounters an astonishingly en. 455 This book this author is a revelation And yet is it any surprise She co wrote a regency parody series with the very talented Elizabeth Kingston And like Kingston she has got the marvellous Nicholas Boulton to narrate this book and I know the mention of his name is enough to be an auto listen for many So what are you waiting for Go find this book The uality of Malcolm s prose reeled me in right from the start That and the fact that she ambushed me at about 10% in and brought tears to my eyes It s been a while since my lacrimal glands got a work out And they did several times in this book Such is the emotional pull it had on me There is subtlety and nuances There is emotional weight in the detail of a small gesture in the choice of a word the capture of a fleeting expression The protagonists they were imperfectly real filled with human fears insecurities and yearnings And disappointmentsAfter 10 years in the Navy and honourably discharged due to an injury Captain Lord Gideon Birch was bestowed a viscountcy by the king for his heroic deeds The title of the book is misleading for it is he who was besotted with her from the start Her beauty captivated him It was a soothing balm to his tortured soul a temporary banisher of otherwise relentless nightmares I have lived a long time at sea Miss Ridley he said altering her notion I have been at war death and destruction my constant companions One cannot forget what beauty is but its effect he trailed off grimacing slightly as he shifted position I have forgotten how to react in its presence Thea s breath caught She was thoroughly certain he had been talking about the garden but it seemed suddenly as though he were talking about her about the incident in the library His silent gaze willed her to respond but taken aback she was unable Nor was she able to look awayFor Thea Ridley it was anything but love at first sight She thought him trivial and arrogant his pre war reputation as a rake preceded him and even his heroic deeds during the war have not eradicated the tales of his youthful follies She has important things to consider than his good looks namely how to keep herself and her elderly and sick servantfriend from complete destitution She has been carrying the sole responsibility of keeping their existence viable for so many years after the death of her parents The burden is increasingly overwhelming with noone to share the loadGideon moves into his new country estate hoping to find some peace and solitude and to escape London where his youthful notoriety and his recent war hero status haunt his every step He is neither the hedonist nor the a valiant hero but noone is interested in getting to know the man behind these labelsHe hires Thea for her linguistic and scholastic skills to organise his new library That it gives him an excuse to interact with her daily is definitely a bonus For Thea his generous employment offer eases her financial worries for the time being but she is wary of being in proximity to him She knows the danger of falling victim to charming words and a handsome visage It was a painful lesson but she s always been a uick student However it is hard to keep her guard up constantly and war has taught him to be opportunistic A touch then a kiss maybe two We must move beyond this incident their heated kiss We must forget that it ever happened just as we will forget this conversation You are a gentleman and that is why you will comply with my reuest He laughed It would take a saint Miss Ridley and not a gentleman for that Or perhaps a better man than me You see I cannot forget it Theirs is definitely slow burn as they gradually get to know one another and peel the metaphorical layers off one another before they get anywhere near stripping the physical layers How she wanted to look away to turn from the sight of this man s pain The depth of it revealed with no warning was too much He could never have sent a man to his bloody end if he d allowed the depth of his fear and disgust to show through the cold disciplined commander s fa ade But that masking of human emotion had cost him something some essential component cardinal to the composition of the human spirit and until his outburst in the library he d been direly afraid the loss was permanent It was good to know he was only human after allA corner of his mouth lifted a wry half grin sour You are far too young for cynicism She bristled at the latent condescension I do not see how age is at all considerate of blighted hopes Thea slowly sees Gideon for the man that he is not the dashing naval Captain nor the seductive rake but a man wounded deeper than his scrapnel injured leg the worst and most enduring injuries were inflicted before he went to war A man who judges himself far harsher than the most critical observer You cannot discount your loss simply because others have lost You are one man nothing Why do you expect so much of yourself This book has been the recipient of some low ratings due to supposedly inappropriate behaviour by the protagonists inconsistent with their status I have to vehemently disagree Some readers found fault with the lack of servants in Gideon s employment He had three employees because he s newly arrived newly titled and additionally wanted a pared down existence It s still three than he had for ten years They found fault with the fact that Thea was spending all the time at Gideon s house unchaperoned She s his employee Female employees don t have the luxury of hiring chaperones to protect their reputation Thea was very conscious of the impropriety and tenuous nature of her employment the danger of village talk especially for a vulnerable young lady with no male relative to defend her There was also no male relative to support her financially Employment choices were not plentiful for those in her position They did not simply hop into bed together There was a lot of consideration and getting to know one another The ending could have been done better While his feelings for her were genuine from the start and his intentions honourable he could be communicative However I get his insecurity and hers as well They have both learnt to uestion their own judgements and second guessing themselves Thea s fear of being left destitute and all alone in the world the eventual realisation of this latter fear it was heartbreaking All in all a wonderful read and I didn t even listen Boulton s narration since I didn t realise until after finishing the ebook that he narrates the audio In my moments of fantasy I have allowed that I should have loved you well In my moments of unveiled honesty I allow that I do and shall continue to love you in the flawed and distant way of which I am capable Unfailingly belatedly and futilely
